What Is In My Credit Report
Your credit report contains information about various areas of your life. Along with the obvious, name and address, your credit report has all of the previous addresses that have been reported to the credit bureaus by you or your creditors. They also keep on file your social security number and marital status. Your birthday is there too because many creditors will use this as an identifier for people with the same name.
Your public records are also included in your credit history file. Any bankruptcy filings, liens against you, or any other action a court takes against you for delinquent bills will be seen by anyone authorized to view your credit report.
Anyone who has ever given you credit is a big part of your credit report. The credit bureaus keep on file creditors who have given you credit and they keep track of how you have handled these accounts in the past. It shows how much you have paid and on what date you made your payment. If you were 30, 60, or 90 days late with your payments and how many times this happened will also be included.
Credit Bureaus also keep a record of who has requested to see your credit report. You will see a list of companies that want to attain your business along with the lenders that you recently tried to get credit from.
Inaccurate information can often be found in your credit report. If you find that there are inaccuracies in your credit report, you can have it removed by contacting the credit bureaus reporting the incorrect information.
Accurate information will be included for a period of 7 years or more and cannot legally be erased. This is why it is so important to take care of your debts and not fall into the bad credit trap. This trap holds so many people from their dreams because they can’t get any new credit. If you have bad credit, do whatever you can to rectify the problems appearing on your report. It may affect the way a prospective lender will look at how you are currently handling your money.
By law, only certain requesters can view a copy of your credit report. Under certain circumstances employers and landlords may view your credit report. Anytime that you request to borrow money from a lender, you can expect them to order a copy of your credit history. They will sometimes do this as a prequalification before actually meeting with you. In some cases, government agencies may be able to view your credit report too. Of course, you have the right to view your credit report anytime, and the credit bureaus have to let you have a look at it once a year for free.
Certain things are not included in your credit report and for good reason. Your race and religion are never revealed to anyone. Also left out of your credit report is your political affiliation for various reasons as this is nobody’s business but your own. Rest assured that any health issues you may have will not be disclosed in your credit report either.
You should review your credit report on a regular basis and report any inaccuracies to the credit bureau reporting the information right away.
What’s keeping you from seeing what is in your credit report?
